Land Rover Discovery 1 Information
Land Rover Discovery 1 information, history and specifcations
The Land Rover Discovery, known as the Discovery 1 ( known affectionately as ‘Disco’) was launched in 1989, to bridge the gap between the Range Rover and the Defender 90 and 110. Land Rover released the Discovery to compete with the smaller SUV’s on the market
The Discovery was initially launched as a 3-door model and later in 1990 introduced a 4-door model. Both had seating for 5, with the option to add two jump seats in the boot.
The Discovery featured a stepped roof and reverse C-pillars, that are now the Discovery’s most distinguishing features.
The Discovery was marketed as Land Rover’s first family car with true off-roading capabilities, with a choice of a 2.5-litre 200 Tdi diesel engine or a 3.5 Rover V8 petrol engine.
The Discovery had a permanent four-wheel-drive system coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox with drive via a transfer box with a lockable centre differential which became an essential Discovery design feature, along with its towing capabilities, offering a 3500kg maximum towing weight.
The release of the 4-door Land Rover Discovery 1 in 1990, came with a fuel-injected V8i engine. Some additional features were also added to the vehicle, including air-conditioning and heated door mirrors.
In 1994, there were further changes made to the Discovery 1, replacing the 200Tdi and the 3.5 Rover V8 engine with the 2.5-litre 300Tdi and the 3.9-litre Rover V8 engines, along with some external modifications that included a second set of rear lights and larger headlights.
